Now, let’s explore how to prepare for driving Going-to-the-Sun Road and what you can expect along the way.

About Going-to-the-Sun Road

Going-to-the-Sun Road, often called the Highway to the Sun, is an engineering marvel and the main route through Glacier National Park, crossing the Continental Divide. The road traverses mountain passes, glacial lakes, cedar forests, and alpine tundra, teeming with wildlife such as mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, and bears. Along the way, you’ll find over 20 scenic stops and three visitor centers: Apgar, Logan Pass, and St. Mary. Running east-west between Apgar and St. Mary, the road can be driven in either direction. What to Do if You Don’t Have a Reservation

If you find yourself in Glacier National Park without a Going-to-the-Sun Road reservation, don’t worry, there are still options for accessing the route:

Enter Before 6 a.m.: Reservations are only required between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., so arriving early allows you to avoid crowds and ensures you won’t be driving after dark.

Enter from the East Side: Since reservations aren’t required at the St. Mary Entrance, you can enter from the east side via Highway 2. Explore the full park and exit through the West Entrance, just 10 minutes from Under Canvas Glacier. The 2 hour drive to the Saint Mary’s Entrance offers amazing views and must-see towns along the way.

Book a Tour: Reserving a boat, bus, or horseback tour grants you access to the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the day of your tour. For the ultimate experience, consider a group sightseeing tour led by an expert guide arranged by Under Canvas Adventures, with stops at iconic sites like Lake McDonald, Trail of the Cedars, Weeping Wall, Logan Pass, and more.

Take the Free Shuttle: Glacier National Park operates a free shuttle along the road between Apgar Village and St. Mary Visitor Center with a transfer at Logan Pass Visitor Center.
