Whether it’s a demanding boss, or simply just the desire to always be a team player, often times you put yourself and your sanity last. But an increasing amount of statistics shows you’re doing more harm than good by eschewing the vacation that once seemed so enticing in your benefit package. Thus, vacations are healthy.

You Need A Break

While there are a slew of great reasons to take a vacation, it’s super important to take one simply because you need a break. According to Fast Company, you actually need to step away from the day-to-day chaos of your professional life to give your mind the ability to process bigger issues while you’re in a relaxed mood. In short, you’ll think new thoughts and be more creative—and that’s always a good thing for your work, and your team, when you get back into the office.

As our daily lives become more and more entrenched with technology, when you do make time to enjoy a vacation, it’s important to unplug. Unplugging can take on a lot of different forms, but frankly, we’re fond of getting outdoors and really experiencing everything that nature has to offer. Take A Break From Email

Obviously in the 21st century, it’s much easier to talk about unplugging than it is to actually do it. For instance, there are legitimate, enjoyable reasons to have your phone on you at all times during your vacation. If you find you’re having trouble disconnecting, we’d recommend finding a plan that works for you. One surefire way to help would be to temporarily delete your work email from your phone. If like most folks you have your work email tied to your cell phone, you’ll find that small red notification circle giving you anxiety just thinking about how badly you need to read that work email. Deleting work email from your phone is an easy way to ensure you don’t have that stress when you whip out your phone to take a great picture, or use the compass to find your way back to the trailhead after you were lost in thought.

Aside from the obvious stress reduction a good vacation will give you, it’s actually also really great for your heart. In fact, taking a vacation once a year has been proven to reduce heart disease. If nothing else, making sure your heart is healthy is an important component of working hard every day.

Don’t Be A Grouch

If you find yourself in need of a vacation, just remember you’re not being selfish. Quite the opposite. Without a vacation, you’ll become a horrible grouch whom no one wants to work with, and clearly, that’s a bad way to climb the corporate ladder.
