Montana Road Trip: 3-Day Itinerary

Few road trips deliver more awe per mile than Yellowstone. In just three days, this Montana road trip offers a greatest-hits introduction to one of America’s most extraordinary landscapes. Wildlife-filled valleys, steaming hot springs, iconic geysers, and sweeping Big Sky scenery come together in one unforgettable long weekend. Yellowstone is vast, so this itinerary is not about seeing everything. Instead, it focuses on the park’s north and west entrances, giving you a rewarding look at some of its most memorable sights without unnecessary backtracking. With stays in both North and West Yellowstone, you’ll make the most of your time in the park and unwind each evening in comfort beneath Montana’s star-filled skies.

Here’s your guide to planning the perfect three-day Yellowstone road trip.

3-Day Yellowstone Road Trip in Montana

This itinerary begins and ends in Bozeman, Montana, where Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) makes it easy to fly in, pick up a rental car, and head straight into the adventure. Under Canvas North Yellowstone – Paradise Valley is less than an hour from Yellowstone’s North Entrance, while Under Canvas West Yellowstone is just 10 minutes from Yellowstone’s West Entrance. With one night on each side of the park, you can ease into the trip on arrival day, spend your second day in North Yellowstone, cross the park, and spend your final day exploring geyser country before returning home.

About Yellowstone’s Grand Loop Road

Yellowstone’s Grand Loop Road is the park’s 142-mile scenic drive, connecting popular sights like Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This itinerary focuses on two sections: the Upper Loop, known for wildlife and mountain scenery, and the Lower Loop, where geysers and geothermal features take center stage. Though the Upper Loop is about 70 miles and the Lower Loop is 96 miles, Yellowstone’s 45 mph speed limits, scenic pullouts, boardwalks, wildlife sightings, and bison jams turn each of these drives into full-day adventures.

Day 1: Arrive in Bozeman and Drive to North Yellowstone

Drive time: 1 hour | Distance: 50 miles

Fly into Bozeman, pick up a rental car, and head south into Paradise Valley, the most scenic gateway to Yellowstone. Framed by mountain views, rolling ranchland, and the Yellowstone River, the drive sets the tone for the adventures ahead.

If your timing allows, make a stop in the city of Bozeman to explore its historic mountain town charm, grab a bite to eat, and browse its shops and galleries. From there, it’s only a 40-minute drive to your accommodations.

Check in at Under Canvas North Yellowstone – Paradise Valley for one night of safari-inspired glamping near the park’s North Entrance. After a travel day, this is the perfect place to settle in, enjoy al fresco dining with views of the Absaroka Range, float down the Yellowstone River just steps away, and rest before two full days in the park.

Day 2: Explore North Yellowstone: Mammoth Hot Springs & Lamar Valley

Drive time: 4–6 hours | Distance: 70 miles

Start early and head to Yellowstone’s North Entrance. Begin at Mammoth Hot Springs, where steaming travertine terraces create an otherworldly landscape. Then continue east toward Lamar Valley, often called ‘America’s Serengeti’ for its wide open scenery and exceptional wildlife viewing. It’s one of Yellowstone’s best areas for spotting bison, elk, wolves, pronghorn, and other wildlife.

Continue south and west along the Grand Loop Road toward West Yellowstone. This route turns the transfer day into part of the adventure, allowing you to experience more of the park rather than simply driving around it. Depending on your timing, consider breaking up the drive with scenic stops at Tower Fall and Undine Falls, then continuing toward Norris Geyser Basin.

By late afternoon or evening, exit near West Yellowstone and check in at Under Canvas West Yellowstone, just 10 minutes from the park entrance. It’s the perfect base for exploring geyser basins and geothermal features the next day. After a full day, unwind with dinner, live music, and s’mores under the stars.

Day 3: Explore West Yellowstone: Old Faithful & Grand Prismatic Spring

Drive time: 4–6 hours | Distance: 96 miles

Spend your final day exploring Yellowstone’s geothermal side. This is where you’ll find some of the park’s most famous sights, including Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring. The west side offers a very different experience from the northern range, with steaming pools, bursting geysers, and colorful thermal features.

To make the most of your time, start early and focus on one or two major areas rather than trying to do everything. Old Faithful and the surrounding Upper Geyser Basin make an excellent start to the morning, followed by nearby Grand Prismatic Spring. If you have extra time and don’t mind a longer day, you can continue toward the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for one last dramatic stop before heading out.

When you’re ready, begin the two-hour drive back to Bozeman or stay one more night and head out the next morning. Even in just three days, this itinerary offers a rewarding Yellowstone experience, pairing wildlife spotting in the north with the park’s legendary geothermal wonders in the west.
