Getting to Glacier National Park: Closest Airports & More

Glacier National Park begs to be explored. It’s a glacially carved landscape of turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks, wildflowers, and winding mountain roads that make the journey every bit as memorable as the destination. Known as the Crown of the Continent, it draws travelers from around the world for its breathtaking scenery, iconic hikes, and a sense of wild, wide-open wonder. If you’re planning a visit, your first question is likely: What’s the closest airport to Glacier National Park? The good news is you have choices. Whether you want the shortest drive, more flight options, or the chance to turn your trip into a bigger Montana road trip, here’s what to know about the best airports for getting to Glacier.

Closest Airports to Glacier National Park

The following airports show the distance and driving time to the West Entrance, where many visitors begin their Glacier National Park adventures.

Glacier Park International Airport (FCA)

Distance: 30 miles | Drive time: 40 minutes

Located in Kalispell, Montana, Glacier Park International Airport is the main airport for getting to Glacier National Park. It sits just 30 miles from West Glacier, making it an easy choice if you want to get from the airport to the park with minimal driving. The Glacier Park Airport is open year-round, with flights commonly connecting through cities such as Salt Lake City and Denver.

July 2026 Closures: Glacier Park International Airport is doing phased runway upgrades, so the runway will be closed at times. Check the schedule before planning your trip.

Missoula International Airport (MSO)

Distance: 137 miles | Drive time: 2.5 hours

Missoula is a good alternative airport. It’s located south of West Glacier and requires a longer drive to reach the park, but the route is part of the appeal. You’ll pass Flathead Lake on your way north, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. It’s a beautiful stop if you have extra time for boating, fishing, birding, and sweeping lake views that make the drive feel like part of the adventure. The Missoula Airport is open year-round and offers direct flights from several major cities.

Great Falls International Airport (GTF)

Distance: 200 miles | Drive time: 3.5 hours

Great Falls places you on the east side of Glacier National Park. It’s a good option if you’re looking to explore the Two Medicine, St. Mary, or Many Glacier areas of the park for a more rugged, less crowded experience. The Great Falls Airport is also a great option if you’re doing a Montana road trip, since it’s about halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Park if you’re looking to hit both parks in one memorable Montana road trip.

Calgary International Airport (YYC)

Distance: 287 miles | Drive time: 5 hours

Calgary International Airport can be a great choice if you’re planning a cross-border road trip through both Canada and the United States. This route works especially well for travelers who want to combine Banff, Waterton Lakes National Park, and Glacier National Park into one scenic adventure.

As Alberta’s main airport, Calgary offers many direct flight options year-round. Just be sure to factor in border crossing time and travel documents as you plan your drive south toward Glacier.

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)

Distance: 309 miles | Drive time: 5 hours

The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is Montana’s busiest airport, with many flight options and often lower prices than smaller airports. While it’s not the closest airport to Glacier, it is a fantastic choice if you want to turn your trip into a bigger Montana road trip. For travelers dreaming of experiencing both Glacier and Yellowstone in one trip, Bozeman makes a lot of sense. You can begin in Yellowstone and drive north to Glacier, or do the reverse, taking in some of Montana’s most breathtaking landscapes along the way.

Getting Around Glacier National Park

Glacier is one of the most popular national parks in the U.S., and summer can bring crowds. Parking lots often fill early, sometimes before sunrise, especially at trailheads and major scenic stops. For that reason, it helps to stay close to the park entrance so you can get an early start. Another great option is to book a guided tour so you can enjoy the scenery without worrying about parking and driving.

Car Rentals

Most airports offer car rental services from national brands. Make sure to book ahead during peak summer travel. A mid-size SUV or crossover offers the best comfort and visibility for scenic drives. While a standard sedan handles most roads just fine, an SUV or 4WD can provide extra peace of mind for gravel paths or unpredictable mountain weather.

Guided Tours

For a stress-free way to explore Glacier National Park, consider booking a guided tour with transportation. Let expert guides handle the planning and driving while you focus on soaking up the scenery and adventure. From guided hikes and sightseeing tours to rock climbing, Montana fly fishing, whitewater rafting, and photography, there’s something for every explorer. Just choose your date and group size – our adventure team will take care of the rest for a seamless and unforgettable experience.

Driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road

Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most iconic drives in the American West and one of Glacier’s most unforgettable experiences. This spectacular road connects West Glacier to St. Mary and takes you by many of Glacier’s can’t-miss sights like Avalanche Lake, Logan Pass, and St. Mary Falls.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open from early July to mid-October, depending on the snow. Even when conditions are clear, driving requires care. The road is narrow and winding in places, with steep drop-offs, tight curves, and dramatic elevation changes that make the journey so memorable.

For 2026, there is no reservation system in place. Still, the park will manage crowds with real-time, temporary entry restrictions to mitigate traffic if areas become too crowded, specifically at Logan Pass. Check with the NPS for updates and vehicle restrictions.
